A woven Nautica logo patch topstitched to the duvet cover corner adds a signature finish to this comfortable, all-cotton bedding. Stay in bed all day with the softest duvet cover you have ever felt! Our luxurious 100% Bamboo Duvet Cover Set is silky-smooth, with a beautiful drape, and soft sheen. It is naturally breathable and hypoallergenic.
Flaws but not dealbreakers: It wrinkles, which is just an unfortunate truth with most percale fabrics. In the warmer months of the year, we think it adds a laid-back feel to the bed. But if you prefer a smoother look, you might like a sateen cover, like the Cuddledown, instead.
The stitching on the Cultiver cover is neat and strong, and even though this is one of our heavier cover picks (it weighs more than 5 pounds), the corner ties stayed secure during our shake tests. The light-gray cover we tried washed well, with no signs of pilling, thinning, or construction breakdowns. It wrinkled a bit less out of the dryer than many of the percale covers we dismissed (a feat for an infamously wrinkly fabric). Even with some wrinkles and rumples, it still looked cool on the bed.
We drew on our research, interviews with bedding experts, and years of experience testing sheets (most of our duvet cover picks are made with the same fabric as sheets we recommend) to come up with these criteria for a duvet cover:
Natural fibers: Natural fibers are more breathable and best for regulating temperature, so we looked specifically at covers made from high-quality cottons and linens. They do wrinkle and shrink more than synthetics, but they can also be washed on hotter temperatures (cotton can withstand more heat than linen), which is the best way to get them clean. If you tend to stain your bedding, choose white, the easiest color to wash on hot with bleach or OxiClean.
Everyone's bedding preferences are different, but at the very least you'll need a fitted sheet, pillowcases, and a cover of some sort. In Europe, it's more common to forego a flat sheet and use a removable, washable duvet cover instead. This is becoming a popular approach in the U.S. as well, which is reflected in the retailers on our list that offer sheet sets without a top sheet. A more traditional American sheet set will include a fitted sheet, top sheet, and one or two (depending on bed size) pillowcases. If you prefer to sleep with more pillows, be sure to order extra pillowcases or matching shams.
When it comes to choosing a cover, it mostly comes down to your temperature preference. A heavy-duty duvet insert in down or down alternative is the warmest option and can be made even warmer with extra blankets. A coverlet or quilt is a good option for hot sleepers, as is a lightweight duvet with a breathable cover made of linen or percale cotton.
Typically, a comforter is a thick, quilted, fluffy blanket that is used to keep you warm. It is usually filled with synthetic fiber filler which is quilted or stitched to secure the filling and keep it evenly distributed. Unlike a duvet, the comforter only forms one piece of all of your bed linens. It is intended to sit on top of your sheets and those who want a layered look might prefer this. Comforters are usually sold in bedding sets that have coordinating separates and makes decorating easy. Caring for your comforter is easy as you can just place it in the wash with your other bedding.
Analogy: duvet is to duvet cover as pillow is to pillowcase. A duvet cover is a protective layer that slips over the duvet and has a closure. Because duvets and comforters can be expensive and difficult to clean, duvet covers are useful because they protect your comforter during use and are easily removed and easy to wash. With duvet covers, you can also quickly and easily change the look of your bed and room without having to completely redecorate.
The duvet should fit snugly inside a duvet cover which can be removed and washed when needed. The duvet cover also allows you to change your style or color choice of your bedding with the simple switch of the cover. This allows for easy changes from season to season.
Confused about the difference between a duvet vs. a duvet cover? Shopping for the two main parts of a duvet set can be confusing. Remember that the duvet is the fluffy blanket inside the set and the duvet cover is the cozy shell that goes around it. You need both for a full duvet set.
The next step is learning how a duvet cover works. Duvets slip easily inside the removable cover, a bit like a bed pillow in a pillowcase. Snaps, buttons, or ties inside the case keep the duvet in place to create one secure blanket.
The duvet cover has three main purposes: design, comfort, and convenience. For example, imagine shifting from your fall bedding to your holiday bedding without putting the whole comforter away. Duvet covers are easily swapped out to match the changing style of your room.
The duvet itself is constructed to last for years and to adjust to different sleeping preferences. As we mentioned above, a duvet set has two parts: the removable cover and the filler. Just like shopping for sheets and comforters, the materials will determine the softness, weight, and heat of your bed.
A durable and high-quality duvet can last years longer than a comforter, especially with fewer trips through the washer. To get the most from your duvet budget, be sure to look at the following factors:
Warmth and breathability also play important roles. If you tend to warm up at night, a lighter tog rating may be for you. Do you sleep next to someone else? Their body heat will contribute to the experience under such a well-insulated cover.
When you live in a temperate climate with four distinct seasons, choose a duvet rated for four-season use. Duvet covers can adjust the feel of the blankets, but the filling will have the largest effect.
A duvet set includes a duvet insert, a duvet cover, and typically a matching pair of pillow shams. A Cotton duvet cover set, however, will typically include the cover and corresponding linens with the duvet insert sold separately.
